The History of Houston

The City of Houston was settled in 1837 after Augustus and John Allen had acquired land to establish a new town at the junction of Buffalo and White Oak bayous in 1836. Houston served as the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas. Meanwhile, the town developed as a regional transportation and commercial hub. Today, Houston is an extremely large metropolis city in Southeast Texas near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Houston acts as the seat of Harris County, being the biggest city within the county in every sense of the word.  Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the 4th largest in the United States!

School

Education  

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the largest school district in the Houston area. Ranked as the nation's seventh largest district, HISD serves 312 square miles with 288 schools, 13,000 teachers and more than 210,000 students.

​

HISD serves a dynamic, highly diversified community and is one of Houston's largest business enterprises.

Other educational options in Houston include a diverse selection of private schools. Houston boasts more than 40 colleges, university and institutions - offering higher education options to suit all interests.

Parks

Parks & Recreation 

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department maintains a large variety of parks and facilities. From small open areas to the sprawling acreage of Hermann Park and Memorial Park, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department provide many places for you to play and have fun. In addition, hundreds of recreation centers, swimming pools and tennis courts are maintained by neighborhood subdivisions.

Shopping & Retail 

There are currently 1,093 retail listings available in Houston, TX. Some of the most popular shopping centers, include Rice Village and the Houston Galleria. Rice Village offers over 200 shops including high-end boutiques and small shops. The Galleria offers more than 300 stores and is the largest mall in Texas and seventh-largest in the United States.
